Monirah Hashemi:

Monirah Hashemi is an Afghan performer, director and playwright whose work engages with silenced stories and embodied memory. Working across theatre, performance and interdisciplinary forms, she approaches the body as a site of knowledge and history. Monirah’s artistic practice centers on narrating women’s experiences of restriction and violence as a form of resistance, particularly in response to the Taliban’s systematic oppression of women and the gender apartheid they impose on society.

In 2005, she co-founded the Simorgh Film Association of Culture and Art in Herat, using theatre and film as tools for education, mutual dialogue and democratic participation. In 2013, she co-founded A Night With Buddha, an initiative created to commemorate the destroyed Buddha statues of the Bamiyan Valley and to foreground women as storytellers and custodians of tangible and intangible heritage.
