Elaha Soroor:

Elaha Soroor is a Hazara singer, composer, and activist whose work bridges traditional music from Afghanistan with contemporary global influences. Recently recognized as one of the BBC’s 100 Women of the Year, Elaha’s artistry and advocacy have positioned her as a leading voice for cultural preservation and women’s empowerment.

Born into a Hazara family of refugees in Iran, Elaha’s musical journey began as a devotional singer. Her public career took off on Afghan Star in 2009, where her fearless performances brought her both acclaim and significant challenges. Faced with threats due to her gender and outspoken advocacy, she relocated to the UK, where her music evolved into a powerful tool for storytelling and activism.

In collaboration with Kefaya, she released the award-winning album Songs of Our Mothers, a reinterpretation of folk songs traditionally sung by women. The album won the Best Fusion Album at the Songlines Music Awards and showcased the resilience and untold stories of women from her homeland.

Elaha’s creative endeavors extend to original compositions like Bread, Work, Freedom! and collaborative projects with Roots Revival, where she reimagines traditional Hazara music through modern arrangements. As a composer for theater and film, her contributions to productions like The Boy with Two Hearts and The Beekeeper of Aleppo reflect her ability to weave personal and collective narratives into compelling works of art.

Through her music, Elaha aims to preserve endangered traditions, amplify the voices of marginalized communities, and foster cross-cultural understanding. Her recognition as one of the BBC’s 100 Women celebrates her ongoing impact as both an artist and an advocate for justice and creativity.
